Lower city Podil

Podil is the historical part of Kiev, the so-called lower city. The name comes from the word “valley”: Podol means “along the valley”. Podol is located on the bank of the Dnipro River. It had a river port, which contributed to a lively trade with other countries. Due to the trade relations, Podil’s population was international. Jews, Armenians, Germans and other nationalities lived on Podil. It was reflected in the architecture: there were churches of different religions.
